Fire Breathing Dragon~Happy Birthday

Because my granddaughter LOVES dragons, I made this birthday card for her. I used clip art of a dragon, from The Graphics Fairy website, to create this card. I put strips of distress inks on a Ranger non-stick craft sheet, misted them with water, and painted the dragon with a paintbrush. Spiced Marmalade and Shabby Shutters distress inks were sponged onto the background.

I feel that there can never be too much glitter-but…if this dragon was real, he probably couldn’t fly because of the weight of the glitter! 🙂

Another Lavinia Fairy Card: Teal Fairy and Her Dragon

To make this fantasy card, I used distress inks and a paintbrush. I put strips of Cracked Pistachio, Seedless Preserves, and Mustard Seed distress inks on a Ranger non-stick craft sheet and misted them with water. Then I used my paintbrush and these inks to give the wings of the fairy and her dragon a watercolor look.

This was the first time I made a mountain silhouette, and it was really easy. I misted Seedless Preserves, Wilted Violet, and Shaded Lilac distress inks with water; ripped a piece of paper and sponged Seedless Preserves above that to make the sky; ripped another sheet of paper and sponged Wilted Violet above that to make the first mountain; and sponged Shaded Lilac beneath that to make the second mountain. I left some white between the mountains because I wanted them to look snow covered.

I printed off the dragon clip art (that I got from The Graphics Fairy website) on my printer and cut it out with a Tim Holtz scissor. This scissor did an excellent job, but I SERIOUSLY need to learn how to do this on my Silhouette Cameo!

Distress Oxides~Wildflowers

I’m still loving distress oxide inks-and learning how to use them. For this card, I wanted to see if these inks would work on lace-they do!

Materials used:

  • Strathmore Watercolor Paper, Cold Press, 140 lb.
  • Coredinations Cardstock, Grassroots
  • Black Cardstock
  • Spellbinders Nestabilities Labels Eight Die, 5-1/2 x 3-7/8″
  • Sizzix Thinlits Wildflowers Dies, 661190
  • Tim Holtz Distress Oxides: Peeled Paint, Fossilized Amber, Broken China, and Cracked Pistachio
  • Ranger Mister
  • Ranger Non-Stick Craft Sheet
  • Piece of Lace
  • Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist
  • Heat Tool
  • Equipment: Sizzix Big Shot

I also used the Xyron Create a Sticker machine to put glue on the wildflowers. To be honest, I needed to scrape excess glue around the outside of the wildflowers, and the inside of them as well. When I checked the reviews for this machine, this issue didn’t come up in the reviews. This was the first time I used this machine, so it may have been something I did or something I need to clean on the machine. I’m going to troubleshoot this because it would be a handy little machine and could save much time and energy in adhering small items to cardstock.

Materials:

  • Strathmore Watercolor Paper, Cold Press, 140 lb.
  • Coredinations Cardstock; Color: Five Star
  • Black Cardstock
  • Tim Holtz Distress Oxides: Fossilized Amber and Spiced Marmalade
  • Sizzix Thinlits Wildflowers Dies, 661190
  • Ranger Mister
  • Ranger Non-Stick Craft Sheet
  • Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist
  • We R Memory Keepers Crop-A-Dile Corner Chomper Tool
  • Heat Tool

I hope you enjoyed my cards and thanks for stopping by!

Lavinia Stamps-Love at First Sight

Love at first sight! That was my reaction, when I saw my first Lavinia stamp. I love everything about these stamps-especially the beautiful, flowing hair of the fairies and the mermaids. Because Lavinia Stamps is based in England, I learned how to convert centimeters into inches when I calculated the height and width of a stamp. I also learned how to convert pounds into dollars-before I noticed the place on the Lavinia website that would figure that out for me. 🙂

I wish a camera had a button to adjust for glitter/sparkle so that it would really show that on a picture. Maybe it does, but I just don’t know about it. 🙂 I wanted the wings to look 3D so I added foam under the second wings. Then I added Stickles around the edge of the first wings and also on the dandelions and fairy. Maybe this picture shows the sparkle more …

Materials:

  • Strathmore Watercolor Paper, Cold Press, 90 lb.
  • Coredinations Paper, Opal Pearl
  • Ranger Tim Holtz Distress Inks: Tumbled Glass, Squeezed Lemonade, Spun Sugar, Shaded Lilac, Mowed Lawn, Peeled Paint, and Bundled Sage
  • Lavinia Stamps: ‘Fairytale’ and ‘Believe in Magic’ (Tracey Lavinia Dutton is the artist of the Lavinia stamps.)
  • Ranger Stickles, Diamond
  • Small piece of Adhesive Foam Sheet
  • Ranger Archival Ink, Jet Black
  • Scor-tape, 3/8”
  • Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist
  • Hampton Art Stamp Perfect-Stamp Positioning Tool
  • Fiskars SureCut Deluxe Paper Trimmer 12″, UPC: 020335034419 – I can’t imagine my making a card without this paper cutter.

Distress oxides rock!!!

Distress oxides rock! Now I understand the enthusiasm surrounding this medium. These pads are a combination of dye and pigment ink, and they’re water-reactive. When I used four different colors on this card, I could still see each individual color. ‘Mud’ did NOT appear!!!

To begin my card, I put a strip of Peeled Paint ink on my non-stick craft mat. I spritzed this lightly with water, using my Ranger Mister; then randomly tapped the paper into the ink, and dried it with my heat tool. I learned that each color needed to dry before I added another color on top of another. The distress oxide seemed to dry rather quickly, when I used my heat tool, so that wasn’t a problem. I kept repeating this technique and adding more layers of color, misting with the water, and drying until I got the look I wanted. That’s one of the fantastic things about distress oxides-you can add more layers of color until you get the desired result.

I used my Sizzix Big Shot, along with Spellbinders Labels Seventeen dies, to cut out four frames. I cut two border frames (from the finished watercolor paper) and two frames a size smaller than both of them (from the foam adhesive sheet). That way, I could use the smaller frames as an anchor to the bigger ones, and they wouldn’t show. Adding the foam adhesive also gives the look of 3D. The two frames were sponged on the outside with Ranger Distress Ink, Vintage Photo.

I’m finding that I really appreciate the Hampton Art Stamp Perfect Stamp Positioning Tool because it eliminates the stress of trying to get a perfectly stamped image. You can just use your stamp again, if the image isn’t solid, and it positions the stamp just right.

  • Strathmore Watercolor Paper, Cold Press, 140 lb.
  • White cardstock
  • Tim Holtz Distress Oxides: Peeled Paint, Fossilized Amber, Broken China, and Cracked Pistachio
