Halloween Fairy Wings

To celebrate Halloween, I created this card using distress inks, alcohol inks, and Lavinia stamps.

The four fairies, which live in the fairy glen nearby, have washed their wings in preparation for Halloween. Their clothesline sways in the gentle breeze, in front of the sacred tree. The fairies wait in anticipation for their beloved wings to dry…they know their wings will smell like magic and sunshine. This is a much loved scent in the fairy realm. They have cherished this day of warmth, laughter, and love.

Alcohol Inks~Card

I bought a package of Ranger Alcohol Ink Surfaces at Michael’s the other day and wanted to try it out. The package contains 5 sheets of foil and 10 sheets each of matte and gloss finishes cardstock. The surface sheets are 4-1/4″ x  5-1/2”, which is pretty good size for making cards. What I liked was this would give me a chance to see how the alcohol inks reacted to these different surfaces.

I used Expresso, Pool, and Purple Twilight alcohol inks on the foil finish cardstock and controlled the direction of the inks with a Giottos Rocket Air Blaster. Then, I put a sealer on the cardstock, not only to protect the surface, but also to even out the contrast between the dull and shiny areas of the alcohol inks. Watercolor paper, sprayed with Wilted Violet Distress Spray Stain, was used as a background behind the alcohol ink cardstock. (After I sprayed the distress spray stain on the cardstock, I wiped it with a paper towel to get a softer look.) Both these sheets were anchored with Scor-Tape onto the black cardstock base.

Because I live in a northern climate, I’m trying to find an alternative protective sealer for the alcohol inks over the winter (I like Krylon Matte Finish, but I need to spray it on outside). I used Liquitex Professional Gloss Varnish on this card. I ‘painted’ it on with a brush, and it left a beautiful protective finish…but the smell-it was so strong to me. I’ll save the bottle until the spring when using it outside will be an option.

Distress Inks~Lavinia Moon Gazing Hare

I just love the Lavinia Moon Gazing Hare stamp-she’s so cute! I masked off the sides of this card with strips of 3M Post-It tape and sponged Squeezed Lemonade, Spun Sugar, and Tumbled Glass distress inks in the middle. A Peeled Paint distress marker was used to make the grass. I CAREFULLY pulled the tape off the card and remembered to immediately wash my hands-I’m so proud of myself. No ink smudges on the white paper!

This was the first time I used this Lavinia stamp, and I had a little trouble getting a solid image. I’ve noticed this sometimes happens when I put ink over a distress inked background. I put some of my Ranger archival re-inker on a small paintbrush and filled in the lighter areas with it.

I stamped a couple of butterflies with Memento ink and used copic markers on one of them. I found that Copic Y02 coordinated really well with Squeezed Lemonade distress ink; RV00 with Spun Sugar; and BG10 with Tumbled Glass. I’m going to see if any copic markers, that I own, coordinate with my other distress inks. I have a plan now (I think) to begin ordering copic re-inkers.

The salutation was stamped, the watercolor paper was anchored onto the base cardstock with Scor-Tape, and the card was complete.
